I have worked in publishing as a writer, sub editor and copy editor for 25 years, at publications including Time magazine and The Week (details are on my CV). I have written several mini ebooks that may give some insights into the English language or even make you laugh.

WHAT DOES A COPY EDITOR DO?
We read every word of an article or manuscript, looking for errors in spelling, grammar, punctuation and word use. Has the writer used "flaunt" (display) when he meant "flout" (transgress)? We can take a long, confused sentence and turn it into three concise ones, in a logical order. We remove clichés and unmix metaphors. Major changes are always discussed with the writer.

WHO NEEDS AN EDITOR?
NOVELISTS Good English and readability will appeal to publishers.
COMPANIES Misspelled words on your website, brochure or handout can damage your business.
STUDENTS If English isn't your first language, your thesis or dissertation will need editing.

Follow my blog THE ART OF WORDS for chat about words, grammar, language, platitudes, clichés and slang (and art, cop shows and detective stories).

My charges start at £200 for three days' work, but can always be negotiated.

In an interview in January, a self-published author sounded relieved
to have at last received some help with the editing process.
"It drove me nuts, because I tried really hard to get things right and I just couldn't.
It's exhausting." (Observer, March 4 2012)
